Instructions Following Hemorrhoidal Banding

[Back to Hudes Endoscopy Center]

Information on this Page:

What should I watch for after surgery?

Today your hemorrhoid(s) were treated by application of a small rubber band over the hemorrhoid. The bands tighten and kill the hemorrhoid just as if they were cut off with a scalpel.

Please contact our office (678-638-6042) if any of the following occur:

  • Increased pain with bowel movement or sitting

  • Temperature over 100.4 F (orally)

  • Bleeding that is excessive

  • Redness or irritation outside the anus

  • Difficulty urinating

Post-Procedure Care

You will feel a dull ache/pressure for 36-48 hours after the banding. This feeling will be noted as soon as the rubber bands are applied. Occasionally, it will make you feel as if you want to have a bowel movement.

In 24-48 hours, the hemorrhoid caught in the rubber band will be dead.

In 7-10 days, the banded tissue and the rubber bands will pass, usually unnoticed, with a bowel movement. If the bleeding seems excessive, call the office immediately.

When very large hemorrhoids are treated, the bands will usually be slow in dropping off. If your ache or discomfort should last beyond several days, the bands can easily be clipped or removed in the office and treatment may still be effective.

Sit in a tub of comfortably warm water 2-3 times a day for the first 2-3 days (15 minutes each time).

Diet

Maintain a high-fiber diet so that your bowel movements will be soft.

Medications

DO NOT take any pain medication that may contain aspirin, Aleve or ibuprofen.

For ache or discomfort, the great majority of patients take either no medication or Tylenol.

If the pain is stronger than just discomfort, the doctor may give you a stronger pain medication prescription which can be filled at any drug store.
